Abseiling

Rock climbing is an exciting sport. People sometimes use their hands and feet to climb up rocks or they use ropes for extra safety.

Abseiling is a fun and safe way to come down a cliff.

In the 1870s a French mountaineer didn't quite get to the top of the mountain he was climbing, so he used his ropes to let himself back down the mountain - and that's how abseiling was invented.

The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.
Psalm 18:2

Getting ready to drop over the edge backwards at the top of a cliff is the scariest part.

You have to be at least 8 years old to go abseiling.

Would you like to abseil down a waterfall?

Equipment

You will need:

Ropes - thick and secure
Carabiner - a large clip
Climbing harness - fits around your waist and legs
Helmet - to protect you from loose rocks
Gloves - protects your hands from rope burn

How fast you go down the rope is controlled by a rappel device. A locking carabiner is the large clip that holds everything together and attaches you to the climbing harness.

Abseiling is fun, but it also is used in many practical ways:

Window cleaning

Fire fighting and rescue
