This stops it rolling away, which is important as the poo marks a wombat's territory.

Can you think why God would have made the wombat this way?

Yep, wombats love digging. If the pouch faced forwards the poor little baby wombat would get dirt flung in his eyes. By looking out between the back legs of the wombat the baby stays clean and safe.
